UNC's Sturdivant, Carter cleared

North Carolina linebackers Quan Sturdivant and Bruce Carter have been cleared to play in the 18th-ranked Tar Heels opener against No. 21 LSU on Saturday.

Safety Deunta Williams will not play due to the ongoing NCAA investigation into the program.

The three players didnt travel with the team when it left Chapel Hill for Atlanta on Friday morning as the school conferred with the NCAA on their status. While Sturdivant and Carter will play, the university said in a statement Friday night the NCAA needed more information before ruling on Williams.

Home field continues to be Utah's advantage

Special to When the University of Utah signed a deal with Under Armour for the company to be its official apparel supplier, the Utes really took the companys slogan to heart.

"Our guys know we are an Under Armour school, Protect this house, and we take that very seriously," head coach Kyle Whittingham said. "It is something that is in the forefront of our minds."

Big Ten splits Michigan, OSU in separate divisions

Any Michigan man will tell you, there is nothing quite like beating Ohio State. Every Buckeye agrees, a win over that team from up North is priority No. 1.

Well, now Michigan and Ohio State could get two chances in a season to beat their fiercest rival.

What would Woody and Bo have thought of that? A rematch!

The Big Ten announced its divisional breakdown for football Wednesday night, and Ohio State and Michigan will be in different six-team divisions when the league expands to 12 members in 2011.

Report: BYU going indie, WCC for other sports

CBSSports. BYU is going independent in football after all.

BYU says it is leaving the Mountain West Conference and will go independent in football while joining the West Coast Conference in all other sports in the 2011-2012 school year.

BYU and its new conference announced the moves in simultaneous releases late Tuesday afternoon, saying further details would be given at a news conference Wednesday at BYUs LaVell Edwards Stadium.

BYU said its resignation from the Mountain West takes effect June 30, 2011, allowing the Cougars to start West Coast Conference play next fall.

Mizzou's Washington charged with sexual assault

CBSSports.co Suspended Missouri running back Derrick Washington was charged Monday with sexually assaulting a former tutor in her apartment over the summer.

Assistant Boone County prosecutor Andrea Hayes said that a single count of felony deviate sexual assault was filed against Washington, a senior from Raymore, Mo., and the Tigers rushing leader the past two seasons.

Coach Gary Pinkel suspended Washington last week without disclosing details. Boone County court documents show Washington had been served with a protection order in late June and accused of sexual assault by a former Missouri tutor.
